Postnatal Chiropractic
In the weeks after delivery, your body is regaining stability and your baby is organizing feeding and sleep habits. We provide gentle, chiropractic-forward care for mom (pelvis, ribs, neck) to reduce hot-spots and improve movement, paired with very light focus on baby’s upper neck and jaw to ease and even improve latch, reduce clicking, and help your baby relax. Care is trimester-aware, low-force, and aligned with mom and baby.
Focus: Moms and babies in the weeks and months after birth. Whether your delivery was uncomplicated or complex, gentle chiropractic can help restore balance, reduce stress, and support smoother feeding, sleep, and movement patterns.
Goals of Care
- For Mom: ease neck/upper-back and pelvic discomfort, improve core and hip mechanics, reduce tension from feeding/holding postures, and support a steady return to activity.
- For Baby: optimize comfort and motion at the upper neck, jaw, and shoulders to support calm feeding, smoother latching, and relaxed sleep rhythms.
Latching Support (Baby)
Many latch challenges are mechanical. When the upper neck (C0–C2), jaw/TMJ, and upper ribs/shoulders glide the way they should, babies can organize a deeper latch with less effort.
- Gentle infant adjustments can improve upper-cervical motion and jaw mechanics that influence tongue movement and head positioning.
- We also check for fascial tension patterns from birth (common after long labors or assisted deliveries).
- Even when a baby has a tongue tie or tight frenulum, improving the surrounding biomechanics often reduces compensation, helping baby latch more comfortably while you make informed choices with your lactation team.
Our approach is comfort-first, low-force, and baby-led—no twisting or aggressive techniques.
How Chiropractic Helps (Mom)
- Adjustments first: precise, gentle corrections for the pelvis, low back, mid-back, ribs, and neck to reduce pain and restore function after pregnancy/delivery.
- Physiotherapy (in-office, low-tech/high-touch): breath-to-core sequencing, pelvic/hip stability drills, postural resets for feeding/holding, and simple balance/neuromuscular re-education.
- Targeted exercises: micro-sessions you can actually do—2–5 minute blocks for mobility, glute/core activation, and shoulder relief between feeds.
- Laser therapy (low-level): to calm irritated tissues and support local circulation where appropriate.
- Light muscle work: gentle myofascial release for the neck/shoulder complex, ribs, and hips.
How Chiropractic Helps (Baby)
- Gentle spinal and cranial work: supports normal motion at the upper neck, which influences jaw opening/closing and head-turn preference.
- Jaw/TMJ comfort: soft, fingertip-level contacts—think “grams of pressure,” not force.
- Shoulder and rib ease: helps babies settle into more relaxed feeding positions and breathing patterns.
Common Postnatal Concerns We See
Mom: neck/shoulder tightness from nursing/holding, mid-back rib irritation, pelvic soreness or instability feelings, low-back pain, wrist/thumb irritation from lifting, headaches from sleep disruption.
Baby: latch fatigue, clicking, preference for one breast/side, gassy/fussy after feeds, head-turn preference/flat spots, general restlessness with position changes.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
- Conversation & History (Mom and/or Baby): delivery details, feeding goals, current routines.
- Movement & Comfort Check: postural screens for mom; gentle range-of-motion for baby’s neck/jaw/shoulders.
- Chiropractic Plan: clear, step-by-step adjustments and simple home strategies you can start the same day.
- Latch-Support Coaching (Baby): positioning tips that match your baby’s newfound motion.
- Timeframe & Benchmarks: what we expect to change first (comfort and ease), and how we’ll progress (durability and routine).
Visit Cadence & Benchmarks
- Baby: typically 1–2 visits in week 1, then weekly for 1–3 weeks as latch/comfort stabilize.
- Mom: often 1–2 visits/week initially for 2–3 weeks, then taper as stability and ease return.
- Benchmarks: easier latch/less clicking, calmer feeds, more symmetrical head turn; for mom—less hot-spot pain, better sitting/holding tolerance, smoother transitions back to walking/exercise.
Home Care & Daily Tips
- For Mom: micro-mobility during the day (1–2 minutes), rib/shoulder resets after feeds, glute/core “on-ramps,” sleep-position tweaks.
- For Baby: side-switching, paced feeding positions that respect head/neck comfort, short tummy-time “snacks,” and gentle carry variations.
Safety & Comfort
Everything we do postnatally is designed to be gentle, precise, and appropriate for the unique demands of this season. We keep care natural and chiropractic-forward, emphasizing adjustments, physiotherapy, simple exercises, laser, and light muscle work—no medications.
