Most postpartum advice focuses on sleep, feeding, and emotional recovery, which are all real, but the physical mechanics of pelvic recovery tend to get skipped over entirely, even though the pelvis went through nine months of dramatic change before delivery even happened.
The Pelvis Doesn’t Just Snap Back
Hormonal changes during pregnancy loosen ligaments throughout the pelvis to accommodate delivery. That loosening doesn’t reverse on its own the moment the baby arrives, and combined with new physical demands, constant lifting, nursing posture, carrying a car seat, it’s a setup for lingering strain that many new parents just accept as part of the deal.
What This Can Look Like
Low back or SI joint discomfort, a persistent feeling of pelvic instability, or hip pain that wasn’t there before pregnancy are all common and often treatable rather than something to just wait out.
When to Address It
Many patients start within the first couple of weeks postpartum, though the right timing depends on your specific delivery and recovery. It’s worth bringing up even months later if it never fully resolved, postpartum pelvic issues don’t have an expiration date on being treatable.
